**How are you running the race? Come chat with us. http://thelife.com/interactive/chat.html
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1b NIV)
“Ready! Set! Go!” shouted the young man helping with the cross-country meet. A group of boys and girls took off running across the field. To our surprise our three-year-old grandson, Ethan, was right behind them.
Where’s Ethan going?” I asked my daughter.
“He said he was going to run the race, too.”
“Sam!” she called to Ethan’s older brother. “Don’t stop Ethan, just watch so he doesn’t get lost.” Sam and two of his seventh and eighth grade buddies loped off after Ethan.
My husband and I watched our grandsons as they disappeared behind some trees. Could Ethan really run a half mile? We came to watch the three older grandsons run in the cross-country meet. But now the event had taken an unexpected twist. The racers ranged from kindergarten to eighth grade. Ethan was the youngest one on the track.
I knew from walking the track in the past that the runners couldn’t see their parents or the finish line for about half of the race. We caught glimpses of Ethan’s bright yellow shirt several times as he ran past the trees. Before long the spectators realized Ethan was really running the race and began clapping and cheering him on every time he appeared.
Soon runners sprinted across the field to the finish line. For several minutes no runners were in sight. Everyone began to ask, “Where’s Ethan?” Then we saw his head appear over the ridge. Sweaty blond curls stuck to his forehead. He was running as hard and fast as when he started. People cheered as he crossed the grass to the finish line – sixteenth in a field of eighteen.
Later Ethan told my husband, “Everybody told me congratulations. I think I won!”
He wasn’t the fastest, but yes, he won.
~Lord, give me the strength and desire to run hard after you.
Question: Are you running the race to win?
